Excuse my language but…..FINALLY SOME NEGROS!!
Today was the start of the spring semester for me and I must say I am fairly happy. I have posted before that I am an honor student and I often find that when I attend my classes, I am usually just a drop of coffee in a room full of cream. Well today that all changed.
My first class had about 3 well dressed and behaved African Americans, my second class 0, my third class (which is my honors thesis class) had 1, my fourth class had 0 (though based on the name of an absent student I believe there will be 1) and my fifth class had 2 (One a guy and one a very ‘ratchet’ girl I have previously had the displeasure of meeting). I haven’t gone to my last class yet, but this is truly a record for me. Oh and did I mention one of my professors is black? Finally I get to be in a class where I don’t get a nervous stare when the instructor mentions something black related. (The professor in my first class actually stumbled over the word slave…)
I would like to mention the classes with zero were all English courses, which is a little disheartening, but did inspire me to explore the relationship between literacy and black culture as my undergrad thesis. A topic I will explore in another blog.
While it is nice to not be the only Black person, it is still concerning that most of the other minorities are female and older than me. Somewhere our black men and youth are still getting lost. However, I will not turn a happy positive post into one with negativity. I truly cannot express how happy I am at the possibility of being able to engage in intellectual conversations with my fellow African Americans.
More power to you! There are many black excellent students out there…just a bit incognito (or use preferred choice of word pun). Even though I am an immigrant, I can relate. Continue to shine and make us proud! Blessings…
Thank you for responding and your encouragement!
I laughed at “well behaved and dressed”. I know how you feel, I go to an extremely white college and now I am abroad in Lithuania. Talk about being one of the only black girls in the country.
Oh wow. I can only imagine!
Thank You for reading and I good luck with your abroad program.
